Pat Cummins Poised for a Significant Contribution in Ashes Series

Test match action

The Australian skipper has taken 309 Test scalps in 71 five-day games with an stellar bowling average.

The Australian selection chief the selector has confirmed that skipper Cummins will be a central figure in the forthcoming England-Australia contest.

There were concerns that the 32-year-old might be unavailable due to a ongoing back issue that was still troubling him.

Earlier indications from the squad suggested no official announcement had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the extended contest set to start on the 21st of November in Perth.

He revealed that Cummins is "building up" and remained hopeful about the prospects of participating.

"We know that time is getting short and there are permutations around that, not only his injury, but other factors as well," he commented.

"We're encouraged. [We are] really confident that he will feature a key capacity. With luck from the opening match. Should that not happen, then we'll pick it up."

Injury History

The captain missed Australia's limited-overs series against India and New Zealand in the previous weeks after medical tests showed a lumbar bone stress.

There is a track record of spinal problems, with flare-ups in multiple past seasons forcing him out of several home seasons in a short span.

Cummins stated he would be proactive in his approach in his recovery plan to make the squad for the series.

The selector indicated that he did not know if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his recovery but admitted it was "pressing" for him to regain fitness for the initial match.

Backup Options

If he's unavailable, former captain Steve Smith will take over the captaincy.

All-rounder Cameron Green was excluded lately from Australia's squad for their ODI contests against India as a safety move because of an abdominal issue.

Bailey described it as a "minor" injury and confirmed that he'll feature in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "ideally positioned to resume bowling."

"Considerable effort has gone into building out the plan for him to participate for the initial game as an dual-role player," he elaborated.

"He was only going to play the initial matches anyway. The way he swings the willow in shorter formats, if it causes any delay for another day, we opted to approach this more conservatively."
